Planning a backyard layout
Most Buckeye backyards mix turf with other surfaces. A common layout puts turf in the center where kids and dogs play, pavers or decomposed granite along the edges and under the patio furniture, and desert plants in beds along the walls. Keeping turf a little way off block walls and out of heavily shaded corners also helps it drain and dry evenly.
Around pools, we leave a clean border between the turf and the coping so pool water and debris don't collect in the seams.
Bare builder backyard or old lawn?
For a new home with a bare dirt backyard, we check the builder's grading, excavate for a proper base, and compact the soil so the turf stays flat. For an older lawn, we remove the grass and roots first and cap the sprinkler lines that fed it.
What families should know
Turf gives kids an even surface without dirt patches or mud. It does get hot in direct afternoon sun, much hotter than grass, so shade structures and lighter turf colors are worth considering for summer play areas. Pet owners should look at our pet turf options, which add faster drainage and odor control.
